This work presents a timely and impactful contribution to the field of excitonic optoelectronics by addressing one of its central challenges: efficient and low-power control of exciton–trion conversion in atomically thin semiconductors. The integration of monolayer WSe₂ with gold micropillar arrays provides an elegant and scalable strategy to introduce localized strain, which, in synergy with plasmonic field enhancement, enables reversible exciton–trion switching at a remarkably low threshold voltage of 0.6 V. This threshold represents nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement over prior reports, underscoring the effectiveness of the strain–plasmon coupling mechanism.
Beyond the significant reduction in power consumption, the demonstration of robust and repeatable switching under periodic gating establishes a practical route toward exciton-based logic operations, including binary encoding and signal inversion. The combined experimental and theoretical analysis convincingly links the observed behavior to strain-induced band structure modulation and plasmonic resonance, offering clear mechanistic insight.
Overall, this study advances the state-of-the-art in excitonic device engineering by bridging the gap between fundamental exciton physics and functional device integration. The approach outlined here not only enriches the toolbox for exciton manipulation in two-dimensional semiconductors but also holds strong promise for enabling the next generation of low-power excitonic circuits and quantum photonic technologies.
